The Vivari philosophy

A clinical approach to wellbeing.

Modern wellness must begin with understanding the body. At Vivari, each guest journey begins with professional medical insight, ensuring that every programme is tailored to the individual. Our approach integrates five essential pillars:

Medical Diagnostics
Understanding the body through advanced screening and professional consultation.
Personalised Nutrition

Therapeutic Recovery
Evidence-based therapies including hyperbaric oxygen therapy, lymphatic treatments and restorative spa therapies.
Movement & Strength
Guided exercise and mobility programmes that enhance vitality and physical resilience.
Mental Restoration

Together, these elements create a structured wellness journey designed to deliver measurable results.

Pillar I in practice · Measurement

We measure before we recommend.

Three objective assessments underpin every Vivari programme: a DEXA body composition scan, a VO₂ max assessment and a grip strength test. Together they establish what your body is made of, how efficiently it uses oxygen, and how much usable strength that structure actually produces — the starting point from which nutrition, movement and clinical care are prescribed.

Assessment summaryDEXA · VO₂ MAX · GRIP STRENGTH
DEXA scan
Dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry, the reference method for body composition analysis. Separates fat mass, lean muscle mass and bone mineral content. Painless, non-invasive, under 30 minutes, using a very low radiation dose — of the order of a few hours of natural background exposure.
What it shows
Body fat percentage · Visceral fat · Lean muscle mass · Appendicular Lean Mass Index (ALMI) · Regional distribution. Visceral fat is associated with type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, hypertension, fatty liver disease and chronic inflammation. ALMI helps identify early sarcopenia, the age-related loss of muscle linked to frailty, falls and reduced independence.
VO₂ max
The maximum amount of oxygen your body can use during exercise — the reference measure of cardiorespiratory fitness. Measured with a respiratory mask on a treadmill or stationary bicycle while intensity increases progressively. Typically 15–30 minutes.
Why it matters
Higher VO₂ max is consistently associated in population research with better cardiovascular and metabolic health, improved insulin sensitivity, greater endurance and lower all-cause mortality. Even modest improvements in measured fitness are associated with meaningful differences in long-term health outcomes.
Grip strength
A calibrated hand dynamometer measures maximal grip force — the standard clinical measure of whole-body muscle strength. Both hands, best of three attempts, under two minutes, no preparation required. Results are interpreted against validated reference ranges for your age and sex rather than as a raw number.
Why grip matters
Grip strength is one of the most reliable single indicators of muscle function, and is associated in large population studies with all-cause and cardiovascular mortality, disability, recovery after surgery, and cognitive decline. It is not primarily a measure of the hand. It functions as a proxy for total muscular strength and neuromuscular integrity — which is why a two-minute test carries information that far exceeds its cost or complexity.
Mass versus strength
Grip strength and DEXA answer different questions, and the difference between them is clinically decisive. Under current international criteria, low muscle strength — not low muscle mass — is the primary indicator of sarcopenia, with DEXA used to confirm it. A person can carry adequate lean mass on DEXA and still be functionally weak. Measuring only one of the two would miss that.
Your report
A clinician reviews your results with you and explains what they mean, including body composition against healthy reference populations, cardiorespiratory fitness level, muscle strength against age and sex norms, individual heart rate training zones, exercise prescription, nutrition guidance and a longevity and wellness consultation. Because all three measures are repeatable, they also form the baseline against which your progress is tracked.

Why body composition, not weight

Two people can weigh the same and carry very different risk. One may have low visceral fat, high muscle mass and strong bones; the other high visceral fat, low muscle mass and poor bone density. The scale cannot tell them apart. DEXA can. This matters most when you are losing weight, building muscle, recovering from illness or surgery, or tracking the effect of a programme over time. Weight loss that removes muscle rather than fat is a common and under-detected problem — and one that shows up immediately when mass and strength are measured together.

Who these assessments suit

  • Adults over 40, and anyone starting an exercise programme
  • Anyone concerned about muscle loss, declining strength or falls risk
  • Executive wellness and preventative health programmes
  • Weight management and longevity optimisation
  • Athletes and active adults
  • People living with diabetes, hypertension or metabolic syndrome
  • Anyone wanting an accurate picture of their current health

Before your appointment

  • Avoid strenuous exercise on the day of your assessment
  • Arrive well hydrated, having fasted for at least two hours
  • Wear comfortable workout clothing without metal, and socks
  • Remove watches, belts and jewellery before the scan — small non-removable zips or buttons are fine

Please tell us in advance if you are or may be pregnant, or have recently had a contrast or nuclear medicine study, as this affects DEXA scanning. VO₂ max testing is a maximal exercise test: all guests complete a pre-exercise health screen, and medical clearance may be required before testing where a cardiac, respiratory or musculoskeletal condition is present. Testing is conducted under professional supervision.
